Women who took to piracy in the Caribbean had to pose as men to get on the crews. The two known women who sailed those seas are Mary Read and Anne Bonney and they both happened to be on the same ship, sailing for a captain who made it possible for them to dress as women. The two women are renowned for their toughness and are legend for being the only two pirates to hold the deck when their vessel was finally captured – the men were all hiding below decks, unwilling to fight for their freedom.
