Responding to the harassment the Spanish were doling out, the French settlers at Tortuga became sea-raiders known as buccaneers. Primarily sailing in canoes and bothering Spanish settlements and shipping, the buccaneers forged a set of common rules for the division of plunder and compensation for injuries and they dubbed themselves the Brethren of the Coast. The rules they lived by would eventually influence all piracy in the Caribbean.
